Culture Cast Roundtable Episode 26 - Who am I?

May 8, 2021

It's fair to say that our Identities are important, but do we ever stop to think how our identities are created and reproduced by the language we speak and the stories we tell?

In this episode, we're joined again by Ying Siu who walks us through the importance of language in identity creation as well as how her research can help better support those who sit 'in between' identity groups.

Ying also points us in the direction of some useful resources that can be used by anyone for mental health support.

Culture Cast Roundtable Ep. 22 - Colt and Joe Part 3

Culture Cast Roundtable Ep. 22 - Colt and Joe Part 3

April 10, 2021

Our recording session with Colt and Joe was just so good that we HAD to release a third part! Throughout the past 2 parts, we've spoken about how complicated identity can be, how common interests like sports can act as "passports" to getting to know others around the world and how sometimes our view of history is jaded by the information we've been given (or haven't been given) in school.

In this episode, we bring all of this together to ask the key question, "how do we adapt?". This question has confused cross-cultural researchers for years and we hope to provide a bit of clarity around some of the ways you might go about succeeding in this difficult task!

As a quick reminder, Colt and Joe are two martial arts specialists who have travelled across the world to practice their craft.

As always, we hope you enjoy and if you have any questions or want to appear on the podcast, send us an email at contact@contextculture.uk . We'd love to hear from you!

Culture Cast Roundtable Ep. 21 - Deana Hassanein

Culture Cast Roundtable Ep. 21 - Deana Hassanein

April 3, 2021

In our quest to get some of the "coolest" people on our podcast, this week, hosts Yuchen and Stewart interviewed Deana - the host of an Arabic radio show based out of London. The conversation with Deana meanders across a variety of heartfelt topics that take root in important topics such as identity, respect and a reflection of the events in Atlanta on March 18th.

Deana leads the discussion by telling us what culture means to her and what 2020 was for her in one word. Spoilers - it was eye-opening! We then move on to an emotional reflection of the Atlanta shooting on March 18 and what it means for Asian-Americans and international students who don't have family in the US. This important section highlights a key discussion that needs to be had between those within the communities spoken about and those that consider themselves "allies".

As always, we hope you enjoy and if you have any questions or want to appear on the podcast, send us an email at contact@contextculture.uk . We'd love to hear from you!

Megan speaks about her experience living in a variety of countries from the US 🇺🇸 to Germany 🇩🇪 to South Korea 🇰🇷 and how these cultural experiences have aided her work in supporting Third Culture Kids and families in global transition. Megan has contributed greatly to the intercultural communication space as a speaker, trainer and writer and it was a pleasure to have her on the show!

Culture Cast Roundtable Ep. 19 - Colt and Joe Part 2

In the last episode with Colt and Joe (two martial arts experts), hosts Yuchen and Stewart quizzed them on their experiences with martial arts and uncovered a bit of the history behind the spread of Judo and Karate.

In this episode, we shift gears and focus in on the importance of culture and identity - touching upon how our education shapes our preconceptions of the cultures of others as well as referencing some pretty high-profile studies such as the Milgram experiment.
